Vintage Japanese Ceramic Suiban for Ikebana Flower Arrangement
This is a vintage ceramic Japanese flower vase, or suiban. The inside is a glossy chocolate brown color, while the outside edges are a rough-textured brown glaze that mimics the look of tree bark. It is rectangular, but the bottom corners are rounded upward.
Suiban means "water tray" and typically houses the spiked weight (kenzan) that hold ikebana flower stems in place, but can also be used as a base for a flower pot, or even a potted bonsai.
